Jynx!
The canyon was cool, quiet, deserted. Sunlight reflected off one side, causing the colorful layers exposed there to shimmer and glisten in the light, while the other was plunged into shadow, a pale comparison to its neighbor. Atop this darkened side, nose peeking up over the edge of the cliff, crouched a small jackal, sniffing and peering into the canyon down below. "Looks empty," the creature, Jynx, whispered to herself, ears perked forward and shifting ever so slightly, straining for any indication of someone walking about below. Still nothing. The smooth edges of her lips drew back into a victorious smile. "It's time." For another moment, she remained still, her body mostly shadowed due to the light coming at an angle behind her, but with a calculating leap she fell into shadow.
Her small, dainty feet landed with nearly no sound upon the ledge below, and skillfully she crawled along it against the cliff's edge, her black and tan body crouched low while she hugged the wall. Honey brown eyes watched the small edge of the cliff she walked upon but still occasionally drifted to their edge, peering into the canyon to make sure it was still empty. Jynx was a recluse, distrustful of any and all she came across, and running into company once she was at the river, cover completely blown, she knew she would be in trouble. "No trouble," she mumbled, voicing aloud her intent, "just water."
She traveled a little further, hopped down to another lower edge, leaped onto another, and finally descended to the bottom of the canyon floor. No sooner had her paws touched flat ground, she stopped, frozen in her tracks. There was nothing there to alarm her, but being rather paranoid Jynx needed to take every sort of precaution she could think of. Her eyes scanned in either direction again, large triangular ears alert and swiveling in all directions. Only the sound of the river babbling along and the gentle rustle of a dry wind through the canyon answered her silence. "Looks safe," the jackal whispered, raising her head just slightly. When nothing changed, she crouched and walked forward, her body low and her steps as silent as she could make them. She reached the edge of the river, glanced to either side, and lowered her head to lap at the cool liquid. It dribbled off of her chin in her haste, and for the moment she was without words, too delighted to have a nice cool drink in this warm weather to bother speaking aloud her thoughts as was her custom.
