Veyron
As with most summer days on an island paradise, the weather was taking the turn from the pleasant coolness of an early morning, to an uncomfortable humid heat that made everything feel sticky and irritatingly tiring as the sun took it’s place in the sky. It was a beautiful day, mind you, with the gentle rolling of the waves along the beach, and the soft breeze whispering through the tall grasses and trees. Aside from the occasional chirp of a far away bird, or a rustle of ferns as a smaller creature passed through, the scene was as docile and inviting as one could possibly imagine.
But, damn, was it hot.
Just along the tree-line stood a dark figure, twitching a pawstep forward, then back again. A physical representation of the uncertainty the figure felt. The shape halted, drew a breath into it’s chest for motivation, then walked with tentative footfalls onto the creamy sands, wolfish head bowed, sharp ears twitching this way and that. The German Shepard came into light, but wore a coat as ominously black as the shadows she crept out of. Her coat was a sharp contrast against the peaceful scene, like a misplaced splatter of ink on a oil painted masterpiece. Only a dingy white ring of fur around the ruff of her neck gave her form any color, which seemed just as oddly placed as her own sudden appearance on the strip of Tiki Beach.
There was only so much the shade of the frilled palms could do for her against this kind of heat, and the water called like a siren to her tired bones and sore paw-pads. Veyron, the Natives name, paused at the very tip of the darker sands where the water had soaked through, taking a moment to lull herself with the rhythmic movement of the incoming tide. Though she preferred the complications of the jungle, the ocean proved to be just nearly as beautiful. She momentarily wondered why she had never come to these shores before, why she had never before been drawn in by the lapping of the waters at the earth. Mostly because she found herself concerned that others would be waiting here as well.
There was a certain vulnerability out in the open that could be so easily avoided if you simply passed through the forest.
Jumping suddenly, Veyron bared her fangs against the sudden coolness that tickled at her paws, only to find the culprit to be retreating back into the ocean depths. Calm down, you ridiculous creature. With a whistling sigh between her teeth, she settled herself a bit farther down into the surf, allowing the cooling waters to wash at the heated skin of her underbelly and legs. She relished the feeling of calmness that slowly seeping into her chest.
Perhaps today was going to be a pleasant day after all.
