It's hard living as I live. So many thoughts that run through my head, and yet no viable way to make them . . . coherent. I have stories to tell, wishes to wish. Dreams to share, and no one will ever hear. I miss that, the ability when my father and I could sit down. Our hearing, both enhanced, by our lack of voice. Only we could hear each other. You see, genetics altered my voicebox, making it incapable of sound, though I am capable of noises not connected to it. I can whisper, but at an inaudible level. I can sigh, cough, things like that. Noises not connected to my vocals, but, anything that is, anything that is . . . true speech, I can not utter. Silence is a life of loneliness, though. No one can truly comprehend what I go through, day by day. And when Season is not around, it tends to get harder still for me to converse. Struggling to find a way to make my thoughts into a method of speech they could understand. Some might be able to read, and I can write it down. Others might be able to understand the just of it by body language. . . But, still, none can comprehend me better than Season, which is why she is my translator. But. . . not even I would make her stay around me constantly. The risk is to grand, for a deer to walk by the side of a dog. Just for her to be around me, to translate my words, is a risk, and it always will be. So many could see her as prey, decide to hunt her, my dearest friend, and if they did that . . . then who would speak for me. With out Season, I don't know what I'd do. With out her, I'd be alone. . . And I'm already so lonely, I don't know how I'd survive with out here.
As if she understood the basics of Autumn's thoughts, the doe looked down at the mute dog, before her delicate muzzle touched her companion's forehead in a silent gesture. Autumn looked up at the doe with silent, shy dark brown eyes, and Season smiled softly, "Fear not, Miss Autumn, I'm not going anywhere any time soon. The deer said in a motherly, affectionate tone. A tone that Autumn wondered if she'd have. The way Season spoke softly, her voice delicate, and woven to keep the peace, rather then to antagonize the wicked. Autumn nodded shyly, though a hint of a smile crossed her face, as she licked the doe's cheek in an affectionate gesture, before smiling warmly and dipping her head slightly. She was thankful to have Season, extremely so. Season at least, she at least made the silence, and the loneliness bareable. It wasn't like having other canines around, but . . . Season was a wonderful second choice.
Autumn was happy to walk with her companion, the two moving with ease among the side of the meadow, following the path that it offered, paw and hoof stepping in sync, into the grass, the shouts ruffling around their limbs. It was a quiet pace, quiet . . . always quiet. She was just relatively glad she wasn't deaf, as well as voiceless. Only then could she not imagine what her life would be like. To say nothing, to hear nothing . . . She shook such thoughts from her head, before touching her nose to her companions side, before bobbing her head to the tree line. And the doe smiled, nodding, before the two took off at a run into the tree line, disappearing into the darkness, before slowing, once more walking together.
This is my story, in a way. It's not an amazing one, and thus far it has been filled with silence, loneliness, and heartbreak. But if finding Season meant anything - I only hope the writer can keep making my story better. With or with out the company of others like me, or even just others of my own basic gene pool. Sure, birds and deer where good company - but, sometimes, I miss the familiarity of being able to be near another dog. I truly hated being alone . . . But, I no longer knew if this was something that i should get used to. Perhaps this is the only life I'm meant to know? Autumn had been alone for a long time now, not that it was understandable. She was pretty, slightly small in stature, but that was more do to the way she held herself. Like she was trying to draw with in herself, to hide away. She had a long, flowing coat. Soft and silky to the touch, the type of coat only capable to her mixed breeding. Golden Retriever meets Hovawart. Her coat was a golden coat with just enough of a hint of red to it to make it stand out against most other Goldens. Her gaze was a dark brown, that was as heartbreaking as it was sweet. She was a beautiful creature, but . . . All she saw was the single, and biggest flaw. The fact she couldn't speak. What was the point on being alive if you could hear everything around you, but where never able to speak to anyone. You could be lonely, as a deaf. You could be shy and awkward as a blind. But when you take away speech, you lose yourself. With out your voice - who are you? With out your voice, who can you become? Who are you to others, when you can't even introduce yourself. Never will Autumn be able to smile and say Hi, I'm Autumn. No, genetics chose her, and now, she had no voice. No family. No friends. Just she, Season, and silence.

Abandoned, along with her brother, when she was only a few weeks old. At six weeks, that is. Her mother and father waited until they could be weaned to leave them alone. Out in the cold. With nothing but each other to keep warm. Why did they do it? Simple, they couldn't take car of all six puppies. But Abby could never understand, and will never understand, is why it was her and her brother that were chosen as the ones they would abandon. Why did size matter? Why was it okay to keep the other four and not them. They left them to die. Exactly what happened within a few weeks to her brother. That's why she was on her own now. With no one else around. It was just Abby, the eight month old back German Shepherd puppy.
Because of her past, having no mother to take care of her, Abby was forced to grow up quickly. Even though she was only eight months, not even a year old, she had to act and do the things that an adult dog would. Hunt, take care of her self, etc. It was difficult for her. She was small because of her age, and had yet to even loose her puppy teeth. She wasn't as fast as she would be when she was fully grown nor was she as strong. That's why she had only ever made one successful hunt. But that was only because it was a small rabbit she caught. She had been living off of grass and scraps left over from other dogs. Though usually the birds would get there before her so even that wasn't much for her. That's why she was so thin, skin and bones, with little fat. Her stomach was always growling, never satisfied.
Four tiny black paws walked quietly along the meadow, by the river that ran through it. She turned and stared at her reflection in the water. Barking at the dog with big brown eyes that stared back at her. Abby hadn't quite gotten the concept of a reflection yet. She pounced at the dog squeaking when she instead fell into the water and quickly jumped out shaking herself off. Small water droplets flying everywhere. She spun back around and glared back at the dog. Growling slightly when the dog stared right back at her.

Autumn had long ago grown accustomed to being alone. She and Season, they were two of a kind, the only two of a kind. No one else seemed to be able to completely understand her, no one else seemed to care. It was just her, just her and Season against the rest of the world. No one else. Since Autumn's father had died, she'd been on her own. Since she ran from her last pack she couldn't trust anyone. Not a single person. Not a single dog. She sighed softly, as she walked, before she suddenly heard parking. Instantly, Autumn froze.
Oh . . . another dog? This was not good, not one bit. Especially not with Season with me. I didn't want anything to happen to my dearest friend. She was the only companion I had ever had. I adore her completely. She's my only friend. And the thought of another dog finding us, the possibility of them hunting my companion . . . it terrified me. I couldn't lose her . . . . I couldn't . . . I'd be so completely alone . . . Autumn turned around, running towards the sound, and paused at the sight of the small, black, soaking wet puppy.
Instantly Season moved forward, and Autumn followed her closely, concerned. "Hello, dear, are you alright?" The doe instantly asked, a small smile on her face as she looked at the wet pup. Autumn's own gaze was hesitant, but there was a slight smile at the sight of the little female. "You're soaked, little one. Come, let's get you dried up. I'm Season, and this is Autumn." The deer said, nodding to Autumn, who dipped her red head gently to the pup. "She's mute, so I'm afraid she can not speak to herself, but I assure you, none of us wish you harm."

The black pup was so absorbed with in her own little world that she had not noticed the dog and doe that shared the meadow with her. If she did, she would have ran the other way. She never approached a dog. Never talked to them. Or at least not first. For she was way too shy and skittish to do that. She had, had one too many bad run ins with other dogs and had learned her lesson long ago. She avoided trouble at all costs, especially by avoiding others. Though if a dog was too approach her first, she would likely show submission immediately.
She had pounced at the water dog a few more times before the stubborn Abby finally realized that she couldn't attack it. She had just gone back to growling at the strange thing hen she spotted them. The dog and the doe. Instantly she began growling, though it was a quiet growl. She moved back slowly as they came forward, crouching down to make herself appear smaller. Her eyes never left the two approaching figures. She couldn't turn and run, they were too close now. All she could do was hope they were nice and wouldn't harm her. Though what could she do if they did? With both the dog and the deer, there wasn't much she could do. She growled again. Though the growl was pretty much silent.
"I'm f-fine," she shivered, her voice nearly audible, showing she was frightened. She looked up at the two figures standing in front of her and smiled slightly at their own smiles. Deciding they were ok and were not going to hurt her, she allowed herself to relax slightly and stand back up again. She nodded when the doe said she was soaked and took a small step forward, still not completely sure if she should trust them. "H-hi," she said shyly and looked to and from the dog and deer. Not making eye contact with either of them. "I'm Abby," she introduced herself, relaxing a little more. Abby quickly glanced up at Autumn when she dipped her head, a small smile on her face, before looking back down again. "ok," she said quietly and slowly walked over to them, sniffing both and finally deciding they might just be alright.

Autumn wasn't to sure if approaching the pup was a good idea, which was hardly a surprise. Where there was a pup, there were adult dogs. Where there were adult dogs, there's a good chance there was a pack. And a pack meant an alpha always on the look out for members. Autumn, however, wasn't the pack type of dog. But then again, she once had been . . . until trouble came up and she had to run to keep safe. Safety - it was her only chance, her only option. But, while she was running about, keeping away from others, she hadn't been around a lot of other dogs. Sometimes she wondered if she still remembered how to be a dog. Sometimes she wondered if she'd even be able to ever calm down, relax, and just be a normal dog again. She glanced at Season, watching the young doe as she led the way to the little pup.
She was a cute thing, soaking wet, and constantly bouncing and growling at her reflection. She was a pretty black, that seemed darker with all the water, and her paws were relatively large, showing she'd grow up to be a larger breed. Season spoke first, ignoring the slight, quiet growls from the young pup. Autumn kept close to her companion, her eyes on the pup, I'm f-fine. Both females seemed to frown slightly at the frightened quality in her voice. But neither female could deny the slight relief when the small pup gave a slight smile in response to theirs. The pup seemed to relax, standing straighter before nodding when Season commented that she was soaked. Autumn smiled, as the pup took a step forward, H-hi, I'm Abby, Autumn noted the way the pup didn't seem to look them in the eye. She was such a cute little thing.
Autumn smiled, as the pup managed a quiet ok before walking over and sniffing them both. Autumn slowly nudged the young pup a small smile on her muzzle before wrinkling her nose and sneezing slightly as her entire muzzle seemed to get wet. Season laughed and looked at both dogs, "How about we get this little one in the water, before she decided to go play in it again. We can go find a nice, warm place to lay down and try and get you all cleaned up." Autumn sent a look to Season, who smiled, "Oh, I nearly forgot; where are your parents, little one? We'd hate to get in trouble for kidnapping," Season asked, watching as Autumn pressed her dry form against the pup, rubbing her muzzle along the young dog's fur in an attempt to dry her faster.

It was because of the fact that she had no siblings to play with that made her so shy. She never learned how to play with another dog. How to approach one and not make it seem aggressive. Even though she was only a puppy and would not seem aggressive to another dog, she still worried about that. She was too used to being alone. On her own. Looking out for no one but herself, and only ever playing by herself. She had never been taught how to be social and so naturally, she was a wall flower. Scared to be in the presence of others, yet hating to be alone for too long. Her natural puppy instincts always seemed to be at war with her learned instincts she had gotten from being on her own for so long. She had no friends and no family. The poor girl thought she would never know the meaning of family.
She watched the dog and her friend closely, though her big brown eyes never met theirs'. After sniffing them and deciding they were, indeed, okay for her to be around and that they meant no harm, she relaxed and finally allowed herself to look up at them. She couldn't help but smile when the older dog sneezed, her muzzle getting wet. When the dog spoke, Abby looked over to her, listening carefully to what she had to say. "But the water's fun!" She barked with a grin before shaking off again. Water droplets sent flying. When Season, the deer, asked her where her parents were however, she immediately slunk back again, her head lowered, eyes dropped. She was silent, a soft whimper escaping her. "My parent's are. . ." she trailed off. She was quickly lost in a daze, a day dream of her past.
The memories were painful, harsh, awful. They were something she hated to think about. Something she wished was just a dream. A dream she could escape. A dream that was not her own. Not her own. Despite what some might think about a puppy having a bad memory, the memories of her past were vivid. Seeming like they had happened just a day or two before. They were something that had created a scar in the poor dog's mind. A scar of her own parents leaving her. Like she was nothing to them. A scar of watching her brother die, beside her. Starved to death. Somehow, she had blamed herself for that death. Though she knew it could have been stopped only by her parents. Not only was she always thinking why her parents chose her and her brother to abandon, but also why it was her to survive and not her brother. But how she could tell the deer all this? She couldn't.
". . .gone," she said quietly after a few minutes. Leaving it at that, she tried to shake off the memories and looked back up at the two standing in front of her, a small smile on her face. "I'm on my own," with that, she was back to herself and growled, trying to make herself seem strong.

Season seemed so eager to make friends with the little pup, but it was Autumn who was watching the little one with a slight smile. She was so cute, even though she was so nervous. Only after it seemed that the child decided they were okay, did she finally look at them, while Autumn used her own long coat to try and dry off the pup as much as possible, But the water’s fun!

The doe and the dog acted like they were trying to make friends, though Abby had no idea. As she had never had any friends before. She wasn't sure she even knew exactly what they were. While she relaxed more, she was still nervous. Shaking slightly, though not nearly as much as usual. The black puppy moved closer to the older dog as she tried to dry her off. Burying her muzzle in the dog's long fur, she looked up at her when she snorted and rolled her eyes. She froze when she stepped back, though she relaxed again when the doe talked. "I am not soaked!" She shook her head and looked up at Season. "I'm just really wet!" She held her low down for a few minutes, ashamed of her past. She became nervous when Autumn slowly came forward, shaking again. Looking up at her with her big brown eyes, the pup was quick to curl in beside her. It had been months since Abby had been able to lay next to another dog. Something the poor pup desperately missed. She moved as close as she could to the bigger dog, until she was nearly under her. When she licked Abby's head, the black down lied her head down on one of the dog's front legs. he puppy looked at up Autumn curiously when she pawed at her. Though she quickly rolled over on to her back. When Autumn nuzzled her belly, the pup laughed. "That tickles!'' she said with a lop sided grin up at the older dog and tried to playfully swipe at her nose with her paw. When the doe spoke however, she became still again and looked back at her. "I can come with you?" she said with a slight gasp of excitement. "can I, can I, can I?" she said, hyper, and looked back at Autumn. "Please?"

Autumn was already amused by the little pup, deciding that she was the cutest thing Autumn has ever seen. She nudged the pup, who was slowly appearing to relax more, but still shook. She smiled softly, as she began to work on drying the black pup off, letting the pup cuddled into her longer fur, and using it was a utensil to help het more of the water off the pup. I am not soaked! The pup then said to Season, making Autumn’s expression turn amused. The doe laughed quietly, I’m just really wet! Autumn smiled, her expression clearly saying ‘you think?’ before tugging the pup closer again to continue and rub and dry to water from the pups coat.
However, when the pup went quiet at the mention of her past, Autumn acted on instinct, moving towards the pup, and laying down, nudging Abby to lay down with her. She smiled as the pup curled up, getting as close as she could to Autumn, that Autumn actually worried that she’d end up laying on the pup. Autumn licked the pup’s head and smiled when the puppy lowered her head down on one of Autumn’s front legs in response, before playfully nudging the pup onto her back, and nuzzling her belly. That tickles! The pup said, grinning lopsidedly before swiping at Autumn’s nose. Autumn grinned, raising an eyebrow as if to say ‘what? This?’ and then proceeding to nuzzle the pup’s belly again,
Season soon spoke once more, causing Addy to still, and look up at Season, I can come with you? Autumn smiled at the pup’s excitement, Can I, can I, can I? Her voice was hyper, as she looked at Autumn, Please Autumn grinned, pretending to think before nuzzling the puppy’s belly again and nodding. Of course they were going to take this little one with them. There’s no way Autumn would be able to live with herself if they just left her . . .

The black German Shepherd puppy shook her head at the doe, who had just called her soaked. Little did the puppy know that the word soaked meant the same thing as really wet, "What did I say?" She grinned, looking up at Season who was laughing quietly. "It's true! I am really wet!" She shook off again, more than likely getting the two others wet in the process. She looked back at the older dog, both curious and confused, when she smiled, not getting her expression. It was not until Autumn tugged the puppy back over to her that she became quiet again. When she continued to rub and dry her off, Abby nudged her gently, as if saying thank you, before she smiled at the dog. Leaning against her slightly, Abby closed her eyes, tired from attacking the water.
The young black dog, surprisingly, lied down next to Autumn as soon as she was nudged. Usually she would have ran the other way when close to another dog. However, she felt almost safe with the older one. It was as if for once, her natural puppy instincts, staying close to their mother and feeling safe, were kicking in instead of her learned ones of staying away from any and all dogs. Abby didn't mind them kicking in either, glad to have a break from always being so scared. The puppy tried to rolled over when Autumn grinned at her, though her attempt failed when she went back to nuzzling Abby's belly again. "Yes that!" She said between laughs. "Quiiit" she continued laughing, her four black paws continuing to playfully swipe at the other dog.
The dog looked back and forth between doe and dog, waiting for an answer. When Autumn pretended to think though, Abby pushed her side playfully, "pleeeease?" she looked at Abby with puppy dog eyes. Laughing when her belly was nuzzled again, she barked excitingly when the older of the two dogs nodded. "Yay!" she barked. "I get to go on an adventure!" she mused on the word adventure. She would no longer have to be by herself. She could go back to being a normal puppy again. No longer hiding from dogs, being afraid to play, or hearing her stomach growl from lack of food. "Thank you Miss Autumn," she licked the dog's nose and smiled. The first real smile that puppy had, had in months.
All too soon though, the pup was back to shaking, nervous. Her head turned to look towards the growling sound she heard and instantly slunk back into Autumn when she saw another. Moving all the way against the other dog, and continuing to try and move even closer, her eyes dropped, not making eye contact with the dog. She didn't like the sound of growling. Not at all. She looked up at Autumn, before looking back down again, wanting to get away from the growling dog.

Autumn giggled, so quietly it was inaudible, watching the tiny pup, What’d I say? It’s true! I am really wet! Season laughed, as both adults jumped away from the water being sprayed off, before Season explained, “Being soaked means that you are really wet, little one.” Autumn nodded in surprise, before tugging the pup back to her, once more, and continuing to dry the tiny create off, licking the pup’s ruff in response to her thankful nudge. Autumn shifted slightly as the pup leaned against her, so that more of her long coat surrounded the puppy, and absorbed more of the water, as she finally began to make a sizeable difference, the puppy more damp then wet now. Autumn smiled when the pup laid down with her, before playfully tickling her, Yes That! Quiiit Autumn smiled, as she was pawed at while the pup laughed before finally pulling back.
Soon it was offered for the pup to stay with them, and as Autumn pretended to think, Abby pushed at her side, and Autumn rolled over, cupping the pup with a paw so the pup rolled with her, sitting on her belly, and Autumn reached up to lick at the pup’s chest, pleeeease? Finally, as Autumn nuzzled the pup’s belly, she nodded, Yay! I get to go on an Adventure. Autumn smiled, as the doe laughed, before the dog carefully moved to stand, rolling so the pup was cradled by one of her large paws and not get hurt when she stood. Thank you Miss Autumn. The pup said, before licking her nose and smiling.
Autumn nodded, nudging the pup gently in a form of ‘you’re welcome, before hearing a sudden growling sound and instinctively positioned herself above the cowering puppy, lowering her muzzle to nuzzle the pup who was now positioned between her two legs, before nodding to Season, that they should leave. “Come on, Addy . . . Autumn and I think it’d be best that we get away from here . . .” Season said before bounding away Autumn moved back enough to pick the pup up gently by her ruff, then running away from the sound, slowing and putting the pup down when they were in the protection of the forest, and by Season again.

The black puppy tilted her head, big brown eyes looking up at the deer, wanting to know what was so funny. Though the puppy giggled when the two others jumped back when she shook off. "Oh!" the puppy smiled when Season explained that being soaked was the same as being really wet. "Then I was soaked!" she giggled. When the older dog tugged the pup back to her, she obediently walked back over and nuzzled her. The pup shook her head playfully when she was licked before relaxing when Autumn made more of her long coat cover her. Closing her eyes, she dazed off in to a light sleep, waiting for Autumn to finish drying her off. Once dried off, she stepped back again. Though she quickly lay curled up against the other dog. She started laughing when she was tickled and pawed at the instigator until she quit. Abby quickly rolled back over and nipped Autumn's side, growling playfully.
Abby was excited, no very excited, when it was offered for her to go with Season and Autumn. She had asked if she could and playfully pushed the older dog when she pretended to think about it. When Autumn cupped the black puppy, she tried to squirm away but her efforts failed and she was rolled over with the other dog. Sitting on her belly, Abby looked down at the dog with puppy dog eyes, trying to persuade her to let her go with them. The pup barked excitedly when Autumn finally nodded and nuzzled her soft belly. When she went to stand again, Abby stayed still, cradled by one of her paws. Jumping up, Abby walked and nuzzled the deer. "Thank you Miss Season," she smiled before returning back to the older dog's side.
She smiled when she was nudged before quickly turning around at the sound of growling. Becoming nervous almost immediately, she slunk back between Autumn's front two legs, shaking and trying to make herself look as small as possible. The puppy relaxed only slightly when Autumn moved protectively over the pup. When she nuzzled she stopped shaking so much, though she still didn't dare move. When the doe spoke, Abby looked back at her and nodded in agreement. The young black dog watched as Season sprinted away before standing herself, still shaking slightly. She was just about to start running after the deer when she felt something touch the back of her neck. With a slight whimper, she was picked up by her ruff. Even though she hadn't been carried like that in months, she immediately froze, allowing Autumn to carry her. Once they were in the safety of the forest and she was put down, Abby shook herself off. Looking around once to make sure they weren't being followed, the black puppy pounced on the other dog, nipping her playfully.
